Job Description
Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Animal Husbandry Officer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for animal welfare, extensive knowledge of husbandry practices, and the ability to provide excellent care for a variety of animals. This position offers the opportunity to work closely with our team of experts to contribute to the health, well-being, and breeding success of our animals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Daily Care: Provide daily care and feeding for animals, ensuring their health and well-being are prioritized at all times.
- Husbandry Practices: Implement and maintain best practices in animal husbandry, including feeding, watering, cleaning, and sanitation protocols.
- Health Monitoring: Monitor animals for signs of illness or distress, and promptly report any concerns to the veterinary team.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of animal care, health, and breeding activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Breeding Programs: Assist with breeding programs, including estrus detection, artificial insemination, and neonatal care as needed.
- Facility Maintenance: Assist with the maintenance and cleanliness of animal facilities, including enclosures, equipment, and common areas.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other team members, including veterinarians, researchers, and animal behaviorists, to ensure the highest standards of care are met.
- Compliance: Adhere to all relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards pertaining to animal welfare and husbandry practices.
- Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to the development and implementation of new initiatives to enhance animal care and welfare.
Qualifications:
- Diploma in Animal Science, Biology, Veterinary Technology, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in animal husbandry, preferably in a zoo, aquarium, research facility, or similar setting.
- Strong knowledge of animal behavior, nutrition, health, and breeding principles.
- Experience working with a variety of animal species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and/or amphibians.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
